Programs
Real Support. Real Stability. Real Futures.
At THRU Project, our programs are designed to support young people with a history of foster care as they transition into independent adulthood.
We don’t offer one-size-fits-all help, we provide consistent, long-term support across the areas that matter most: housing, mentorship, career development, and mental health.
Mentorship
The mentorship program at THRU Project is the foundation of everything we do. We match each young person with a dedicated mentor who provides consistent guidance, encouragement, and support.
Mentors and youth are carefully paired based on compatibility, location, and shared interests to build strong, lasting relationships. For youth transitioning out of foster care, having one trusted adult can significantly improve long-term outcomes, stability, and confidence.
Supervised Independent Living (SIL)
Our Supervised Independent Living (SIL) program is a voluntary extended foster care option for young adults ages 18–21 in San Antonio. This program allows participants to live independently while still receiving structured case management and support services.
SIL helps foster youth develop critical life skills, achieve financial independence, and successfully transition into adulthood with the guidance they need.
College Housing
The college housing program provides rent-free, apartment-style housing for up to four years to students with a history of foster care.
By eliminating the burden of housing costs, participants can fully focus on earning their degree, maintaining academic success, and building a strong future. This program is a key solution for foster youth pursuing higher education in San Antonio.
Next Step Vocational Housing
The Next Step Vocational Housing program offers rent-free housing for young adults enrolled in vocational or trade programs.
Designed for foster youth pursuing careers in skilled trades, this program removes housing instability so participants can concentrate on completing their training and entering the workforce with confidence.
BreakTHRU
BreakTHRU is our comprehensive mental health and wellness program, providing trauma-informed support for foster youth and young adults. Services include: occupational therapy, individualized counseling, and peer support groups.
These resources help participants build emotional resilience, improve mental health outcomes, and successfully navigate the transition to independent living.
THRU Talks
THRU Talks is a life skills training program developed in partnership with local San Antonio organizations.
Workshops cover essential topics such as:
- Financial literacy and budgeting
- Health and fitness
- Nutrition
- Mental health awareness
These sessions are designed to equip foster youth with the practical knowledge needed for long-term independence. Mentors are encouraged to attend alongside participants to strengthen support systems.
Pass to Success
Reliable transportation is critical for independence. Through our Pass to Success program, VIA Metropolitan Transit partners with THRU Project to provide bus passes to participating youth.
Access to public transportation allows young adults to:
- Maintain employment
- Attend school or training programs
- Keep medical and personal appointments
This program directly supports stability and long-term success.
Fostering Connections
The Fostering Connections program provides cell phones to youth in our programs, ensuring they have access to essential communication tools.
For young people aging out of foster care, staying connected is critical. Access to a phone allows participants to maintain contact with mentors, employers, educators, and support networks, helping them stay on track and engaged.
